Situated on a tree topped rise just inland from Koggala Beach, Pooja Kanda is close to many of the areas top attractions.

Driving inland from Galle is a refreshing contrast of lush jungle interior, unspoilt and seemingly untouched by tourism. Portuguese names much in evidence - Pereira, Fernando and Mendez. Even though the Portuguese established a Franciscan Chapel as early as 1543 with a trading colony, very few Portuguese monuments have survived. The Dutch broke them up as cannon fodder!

The Hiyare bio Diversity Reserve is 35 minutes north of Galle, so if you haven’t time for Sinharaja –the UNESCO King of Lankan rainforests further inland - the Hiyare is 600 acres of virgin lowland rainforest around a very picturesque lake; run by informative and helpful research fellows. Heading inland on the Udugama road there are 37 acres of primeval rainforest at Kottawa with sheets of moss, hanging creepers, orchids, astonishing butterflies, endemic birds as well as an Arboretum.

Don t miss the incongruous sight of a full scale tea plantation with Tamil tea pluckers in their hill-country vibrants, filling baskets with two-leaves-and-a-bud surrounding the sea-level tea Factory at Tittagalla; possibly the only tea estate this near to sea, in the world, it also produces the worlds most expensive White tea; $1500 a kilo for a Champagne of teas! A lot more affordable are their cups of Rainforest tea and best-chocky-cake-on-the-island served in owner’s bungalow overlooking the incongruous sight of tea bushes growing amidst Papaya and coconut trees. Surreal or what!

If you see ladies by the roadside crouched painstakingly over cushions and pins, they are nimbly involved in the art of lace making; worth watching, worth investing as heirlooms for your heirs.
