The eponymous English cuppa might have been somewhat stronger if not for the 1865 coffee blight. Old Ceylon’s up-country plantations were devastated – but not so the spirits of the pioneering planters. They threw in a crop of tea and never looked back.

Sri Lanka is still the world’s largest exporter of tea and major industry has never looked so good! The train here is worth taking even if you have nowhere to go – as long as you’re in the observation carriage. As you meander out of Kandy, dense jungle opens into cloud forest, with undulating vistas of immaculate tea bush carpets in between. Startling orange minivets perch on outrageously vivid Spathodia blossoms, hairpin bends cling onto hillsides somewhere between soaring peaks and dramatic ravines, thundering waterfalls tumble and glassy lakes reflect the astonishing scenery – just in case you missed it. As James Emerson Tennent said in 1860, Sri Lanka “..unfolds a scene of loveliness and grandeur unsurpassed, if it be rivaled by any land in the universe.”

The majestic high point, literally and spiritually, is Adam’s Peak, join thousands of pilgrims to watch dawn sun rise over an ocean of cloud in the valley below. Explore Adisham Monastery - a mock Leeds Castle, take a punt on a horse at the Nuwara Eliya races, bathe under your own private waterfall, cheer from the steep sidelines at the Mahagasthota Hill Climb – started in the ‘30s to amuse the early planters and now the Grand Prix of the island. From the breathtaking effortlessness of the bird watching to the white-knuckle thrill of black-water rafting, Tea Country has something to stimulate you!
