Visit to a farming community by boat – Digana
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Tamarind Gardens is a community based project with ‘sustainability’ at its core. Its existence and all the activities which surround the property have been designed in order to bring economic benefit to a community which struggles daily with a very harsh environment. The property, perched above the stunning Victoria Reservoir, is home to a domestic farm which includes cattle, poultry and a vegetable and fruit garden.
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: This guided walk allows you to explore the village, meet interesting local people and learn about their way of life. Visit the home of a jewelry maker who handcrafts delicate Kandyan jewelry and watch as he fashions individual pieces from sheets of copper and semi-precious stones. Visit the home of the lady who runs the Incense making cottage industry for a ‘hands on’ experience of incense making. Experience the entire process, starting with the melting of the various resins together with specific oils, the preparation of the incense mixture together with ash and exotic scents and finally the lady will allow you the opportunity to get your hands dirty and actually prepare your own incense sticks! Return to Tamarind Gardens and check in on the resident Jersey cows. You may see the baby cows wandering around the estate. They are all friendly and love being petted! Finally, enjoy a cup of tea and the stunning view of the Victoria reservoir before departing back to your hotel.
