A visit to a Sri Lankan garden – Matale

Experience Overview

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Sri Lankan garden is a working spice and fruit farm, nestled in a rural village in Matale. The farm has a variety of spices, vegetables, fruits and herbs, along with some great views of the Aluvihare mountains. Set on the upper half of the mountain on fifteen and a half acres, the garden is filled with Pepper, Nutmeg, Cocoa, Coffee, Papaya, Jackfruit, Passion fruit, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Mango, Banana, Coconut, Rubber, Teak and Mahogany.

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: At the farm you will be greeted by the planter with fresh juice sourced from the farm. Go on an easy hike around the farm with the planter to learn about the crops and trees for around 45 minutes.

After the informative hike, enjoy a delicious, traditional home cooked rice and curry lunch, prepared with fresh herbs and vegetables sourced mainly from the plantation. The planter will join you for lunch and share his knowledge on the exotic vegetables and herbs. He may also teach you the local-style of consuming rice and curry, if you are up for the challenge!

Our German planter has lived in Matale for the last four decades. During his time in Sri Lanka, he has worked with the Sri Lankan Army and acted in a couple of Sinhalese movies. He has a wide knowledge of the crops and livestock, and is well versed with the geography and agricultural nuances of the Matale area.

includes: A guided walk, fresh juice, water and an authentic lunch
duration: 1.5 hours
difficulty: Easy
suitable for children: There is ample space for small children to run around and they will like interacting with nature, although they may not be able to follow the explanations and the walk may be a bit too long. Children over 5 or 6 will enjoy the walk and probably come up with interesting questions themselves.
times: Between 11AM and 2 PM.
what to wear or bring along: Light clothing, a hat and a pair of trainers.
important to know: It is best to do this Experience on your way to Kandy from the Cultural Triangle. The drive from Kandy to the garden is around 1 hour.
You could encounter mosquitoes on the walk during the rainy season. Mosquito and insect repellent can be provided upon request. If it rains, the planter will conduct a discussion on spices, herbs and fruits at the open air pavilion. Lunch will also be served there or at the plantation house. The host may not be available on some occasions but an alternative guide will be present to conduct the Experience.
private or not? This experience is always private.
