Afternoon tea with a view
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: As the afternoon folds in on Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, the low hanging sun casts an orange hue and long fingered shadows across the dry plains. In this picturesque golden hour before sunset, the earth appears terracotta in color and the emerald forests are more verdant and beautiful than ever. More than 2000 years ago Sinhalese Kings left their legacies – palaces, fortresses, monasteries, and elaborately created irrigation systems – all over this region. These days the ruins of these intricate displays of skill and precision stand as testament to the grandiose beginnings of the Sri Lankan civilization. Climb up to the elevated Boulder Garden, the best spot in the Cultural Triangle from which to enjoy the sunset, offering panoramic views of all the main Cultural sites. Through a system of ropes and pulleys your afternoon tea will be delivered to you, picnic-style from the top. The fare is basic but pleasing, however it is the views that will blow your mind.
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: The Boulder Garden sits perched atop of the forest and it requires a short climb through the thicket to reach the top. Starting from the bottom you will meet your naturalist who will take you on a mini hike to reach the base, pointing out interesting flora and fauna as you ascend. Once you reach the top you will walk out onto a plateau that is surprisingly high up considering the short climb. From here you can view the Cultural Triangle in all its glory. On one side sits the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya and the Golden Temple of Dambulla, on the other side you’ll get picturesque views of birds flying over Kandalama Lake. If you like, your naturalist can guide you over to the other side of the rock to see the whole thing from a different angle. Otherwise, you can settle down to a delicious spread of cakes, Sri Lankan sweets, pastries, and hot tea served by your personal butler on a table made out of rock. This is a surreal and humbling experience.
