GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Established in the 1940s by Guru Chitrasena, The Chitrasena Dance Company is Sri Lanka’s oldest and most prestigious dance company and was instrumental in bringing the island’s traditional dances from village rituals to the modern stage. Over 40 years, the School has set the standards in transforming dance theatre in Sri Lanka through the foundations laid by Guru Chitrasena. Today, story of traditional dance and Guru Chitrasena is kept alive by his the heirs to his artistic dynasty and vision, who have nurtured his legacy with deep love and respect. Reputed for being the pioneers and revolutionists in the dance sphere in Sri Lanka – they continue to experiment without compromise and use traditional dance language and form to create cutting-edge contemporary dance theatre.
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: The Chitrasena Dance Company offers two exclusive experiences that portray the many different aspects of traditional Sri Lankan dance, which accommodate many different interest levels: from interactive sessions, to behind the scenes sneak previews of shows; each experience ties in fitness, rhythm, skill and meeting living legends of Sri Lankan dance.
ABOUT YOUR HOST: Born into a pioneering family of dance in Sri Lanka, Heshma Wignaraja continues the work and legacy of her grandparents, who brought traditional indigenous dance to the national and international stage beginning in the 1940s. The Chitrasena Dance Company is Sri Lanka’s oldest and most prestigious dance company, having represented Sri Lanka internationally since 1952. In her dual roles as Artistic Director of the dance company and Director of the Board of its foundation, Heshma is responsible for choreographing, producing, and directing all productions as well as overseeing administrative staff and managing strategic planning for the foundation. While in the U.S. she explored modern dance choreography, the latest techniques in dance training, and effective management of dance schools.
Includes: A guided tour with a member of the Chithrasena family, lunch or refreshments, vehicle and driver.
Duration: 2.5 hours.

Times: Saturday mornings from 10am and Wednesday evenings from 5pm.
