Whale watching – Trincomalee
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Sri Lankan marine life is abundant and for many years visitor’s have waxed lyrical about the many tropical fish that have made a home in the colourful corals surrounding the island. Until recently, however, Sri Lanka’s whale population was virtually unheard of. But Sri Lanka is in a unique position when it comes to its ocean. Sri Lanka’s continental shelf sits very close to shore in three main areas around the island, a feature which is rarely seen in other countries. This means that just a short boat ride away from the coast the sea drops to a depth of close to 1,000m. Having such incredibly deep waters so close to shore provides the perfect habitat for whales, who require deep water to live in but enjoy the benefit of being close to nutrients flowing closer to shore. The population of whales living in the seas surrounding Sri Lanka is unknown, but chances of seeing whales in the season are around 90%, making it one of the best places in the world to view blue and sperm whales.
