Creative writer’s workshop with a Sri Lankan novelist – Colombo
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Spend a half day, full day or multiple days with a famous Sri Lankan author, renowned writer and teacher, in a Creative Writer’s Workshop that can be tailor made to suit your interests and time. The exclusively hosted creative writer’s workshop shares interesting and engaging lessons that any writer, at any stage, will benefit from.
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: The Creative Writer’s Workshop is perfectly suited to those who have a love for literature and is a welcome experience for those wishing to explore their creativity, which doesn’t find an outlet in their regular work life. This one on one workshop gives participants an insight into how writers work and gets you inside the mind of a writer. The workshop, depending on the number of days, covers many fundamental elements of creative writing and storytelling – character, plot, point of view, etc. These building block of creative writing are explained through a series of writing warm-up exercises, a step by step presentation about the mechanics of writing, readings and interactive discussions. Key concepts illustrated with passages from great works of fiction, the method of writing ‘through reading’ and low key exercises will allow you to immediately apply what you learn to your own writing. Two kinds of workshops are offered: Creative Writing: Introduction and Writing Narrative (Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction). This last course is only offered for the 5-7 day workshops. YOUR HOST: Your host was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1965. He migrated to Canada with his family at the age of nineteen and has studied creative writing and theatre. He holds a BFA from York University, as well as an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. His first novel, was published to acclaim in 1994 and won the WH Smith/Books in Canada First Novel Award and in the US the Lambda Literary Award. He is also the editor of an anthology, published in Canada and the US. His novel for young adults, was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award and is the winner of the Lambda Literary Award in the US, the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year Award and Silver Winner in the Young Adult Category of ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Award. He teaches creative writing at the University of Toronto, University of Guelph and the Humber School for Writers.

What to Wear or Bring Along: Light, cool clothing, a laptop or notepad.
Important Information: For the 5 or 7 day workshops, participants will be expected to read all the work in the course pack as well as submissions by other participants, before the first day of the workshop. Following the 5 or 7 day workshop, participants will be expected to submit rewrites of workshopped work via email for critique by the instructor.
