Seven days sailing across Sri Lanka’s undiscovered North

Experience Overview

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The mysterious Palk Strait is the body of water that sits between the state of Tamil Nadu in India and the Northern province of Sri Lanka. Once a popular ferry route between the two countries, transport between India and Sri Lanka was discontinued amid rising fears over ethnic tensions during the 30 year civil war. As the war continued, tourism ceased to exist within this devastated area. In fact, the entire North of the country became a no-go for travelers and remained so until the end of the war in 2009. Visitors to this part of the island will be pleasantly surprised and warmly rewarded for taking a step well and truly off beaten track. The people living in these Northern areas, who lived for years through a devastating war, are optimistic in the face of a new future, and keen for an increase in tourism to the areas to help an economy that was shattered by war. Undertake one of the most unique adventures in the country: a seven day sailing trip through the most untouched part of Sri Lanka. Explore rugged coastlines, wild landscapes, and forgotten villages, living for a full week on board a luxurious sail boat. This is truly an unforgettable and authentic experience, offering you unparalleled access to Sri Lanka’s most remote locations.

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: You’ll be warmly greeted by the crew at Tailaimannar, who will give you a safety briefing and discussion about your home for the week, a beautiful custom-built catamaran designed and constructed in Sri Lanka itself. The boat is fully equipped with everything you need to enjoy your trip: there is snorkeling equipment so that you won’t miss out on the beauty of these untouched coral reefs, there is also fishing equipment should you wish to catch your own dinner, and stand-up paddle boards, just for fun! You’ll sail across Palk Bay, stopping in Palitivu, Jaffna, Nainativu island, Delft Island, Kachchaitivu, and Adam’s Bridge, allowing you to visit the many fascinating historical sites in this area, with plenty of time left over to relax on the beautiful isolated white sandy beaches too. Meals be served on board or sometimes specially arranged on land, and you’ll have your own private chef cooking for you on the boat. On the last day you will sail back to Tailamannar for a drop off just after breakfast at 10am.

includes: either the entire boat or a cabin on the boat, depending on your choice. Also included are experienced crew and skipper, snorkeling gear, stand up paddle board, on board guide, all meals.
duration: 7 days

times: 4pm on day 1 until 10am on day 7.
what to wear or bring along: Cool, light clothing, a cap, sunscreen, your camera, sea sickness tablets, a jumper as it can get a little windy on the boat at night, and a real sense of adventure!
