Sri Lankan high tea and traditional boat ride
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The tropical Southern belt of Sri Lanka is so rich in biodiversity that seemingly anything can both grow and flourish in its favorable environment. Cinnamon, tea, and rubber, three of Sri Lanka’s largest imports, grow freely in this region and fruit and vegetables are quick to yield. The Bentota area is normally famed for it’s beaches, but just a short drive away from the coast tropical plantations await. Take a visit to a tea, cinnamon, and rubber estate for a chance to learn more about Sri Lanka’s most sought after produce. Finish up with a boat ride on an ‘oruwa’ before settling down for homegrown tea and traditional Sri Lankan sweets overlooking the plantation the ingredients were harvested from.
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: Take a ten minute drive from Bentota out to a resort surrounded by a working tea estate, freely growing cinnamon, tropical plants and flowers, rubber trees and a well-attended fruit and vegetable garden. Here you will board a traditional ‘oruwa’ – a small wooden boat normally used for fishing – and head out into the lake. The sound of the oar touching the water and the birds singing in the trees makes up the extent of sound in this serene area. It’s a great way to relax and forget the world for a while. When you return to shore, Mr Nihal, the resident host, will take you on a tour of the plantations to share his knowledge on the area’s diverse plant life and local crops. After building up your appetite during the walk, sit down to a delicious “Sri Lankan high tea” consisting of tea and traditional Sri Lankan sweets made with produce from the plantation.
