Experience Overview

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Spend a morning or afternoon with a renowned photographer at his home in the hills in Kandy, just outside of Kandy city. Re-live some of Sri Lanka’s recent history through his books and prints and engage with traditional village culture, everyday modern scenes and observations throughout the 26 year old civil war which ended in 2009. Your host’s iconic photographic work has received much local and international attention during the last 30 years.

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: Recorded from 1985 to present, Your host’s photographic work expresses both diversity of subject and location, he remains a user of both black and white and color film in his portraits, landscapes and observational photographs that he has created island – wide. His unusual approach to photography is presented in his living room, a laid back and intimate space where you will see Sri Lanka through the eyes of a photographer who draws attention to the environment, local culture and the realities of conflict. The experience starts with an introduction to your host’s earlier imagery, which began in portrait photography in London and San Francisco in the early 1980s. Sit down with refreshments to a presentation and interactive discussion of his work which includes rare imagery of Sri Lanka from the 80s to the present.

ABOUT YOUR HOST: Your host gained his BA in photography at the Arts Institute Bournemouth and his MFA at the Arts Institute San Francisco in the early 1980s. He then became a freelance portrait photographer in London and was published in the leading magazines of the time. His work has featured in many leading publications including City Limits, Amnesty International, ICRC, Blue Print, Tattler, The Telegraph, Cafod, Hotshoe, Foto 8, International Alert, BBC and the Times. From 1986 he developed new works in Sri Lanka, creating several exhibitions that were shown both in Sri Lanka and the UK. His first book, Lanka 1986-1992 was published in the UK in 1993. His second book Sri Lanka War Stories, was published in 2008 and Dharmadeepa in 2009. His Sri Lankan photographs have appeared worldwide in magazines, academic research papers, newspapers and films and his work exhibited internationally and retained in private collections.

Difficulty: Easy.
Suitable for children: Small children may not follow. This experience is designed for those with a keen interest in Sri Lanka’s civil conflict history and photography.
Timings: 10am
What to wear or bring along: Cool, light clothing.

Important to know: Feel no pressure to buy photographs – the experience was conceived as a way of granting you private access into an artist’s home and life in Sri Lanka, and for the charisma of your host and the beauty of his work. No alcohol is served at your host’s house but if you’d like to bring your own you are welcome to.
Making the most of it If you are a keen photographer, feel free to ask your host about photographic workshops, he just may oblige you to a private workshop session!
