Whale and dolphin watching by private catamaran – Mirissa

Experience Overview

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Sri Lanka may well be one of the best places in the world to see blue whales. The island enjoys a unique position in the Indian Ocean, with the shoreline lying unusually close to the continental shelf, the deep point at which larger marine life is able to thrive whilst still feeding off the nutrients that flow from shore. This means that the deep-waters that provide a habitat for whales can be easily reached by boat, and conditions for whales – particularly sperm and blue whales – are excellent. During the whale-watching season there is almost a 90% guarantee of seeing whales. Spend a morning on a beautiful private luxury catamaran to spot dolphins and whales out at sea.

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: Set out at 6.30am for the best whale-watching conditions and the calmest oceans. Boarding the boat at Mirissa, you will set sails for the Indian Ocean on a stunning and modern catamaran complete with a professional crew, all safety equipment and a well-equipped kitchen where the chef will whip you up a delicious full breakfast and a three course lunch. As soon as the guide spots whales, you’ll be invited up to the top deck or front of the boat to get the best views of the whales. After the whale-watching you’ll head back towards shore, anchoring on the way for the chance to jump into the water and try some stand up paddle boarding or snorkeling. Finally at around midday, the chef will serve up lunch to eat on board as you sail back.

includes: Boat ride, experienced crew and skipper, snorkeling gear, stand up paddle board, canoes, freshly prepared breakfast, three course lunch, water.

important to know: Depending on the weather, the ride can be a little bumpy. Take anti-sickness tablets ahead of time. For protocol reasons you are compelled to wear a life jacket as you leave the harbour. During the Peak season, especially around Christmas time the fishing lanes tend to get crowded with dozens of other boats out to see whales. Although sightings of blue whales are common, sightings are not guaranteed.
