A guided walk around Kandy with a local expert

Back Back

Surrounded by hills in the center of Sri Lanka, Kandy is renowned as the last capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom. Founded in the latter part of the 15th century, Kandy has had an elaborate history long before royalty settled in and continues to play a pivotal role in the island’s geographical and cultural landscape. The Temple of the Tooth, the Kandyan Lake which was built to reflect the beauty of the ornate temple and the colorful streets of Kandy market are just some of the places you will visit during this experience.

Experience Overview

Meet your local host by the Kandy Lake and take a stroll down along its side as he tells you stories about Sri Lanka’s last kingdom. From there make your way to the site of the Temple of the Tooth – the most sacred temple in the island – that holds Buddha’s tooth relic which was originally built between 1687 and 1707. Walk through the busy streets of the city and visit several local sites including a church and the clock tower that overlooks the town. Afterwards drop in at the iconic Empire Café for a drink before navigating your way through the vibrant Kandy street markets which have everything from aromatic spices, vegetables and fruits, to the latest fashion trends.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
