Colombo’s cultural walk

Back Back

Colombo, Sri Lanka’s metropolitan capital, has been a melting pot of cultures for over a century. With various European powers colonizing the island in quick succession and numerous tradesmen coming into the country in search of aromatic spices and gemstones, Colombo’s geographical and cultural landscape has been globally influenced. Colombo’s identity has been firmly embedded in this rich culture which captures the soul of Sri Lanka’s diversity.

Experience Overview

Start off your walk from the Seema Malakaya, a floating temple located just outside the heart of Colombo where you will learn much about the Buddhist philosophy which plays an intrinsic part in the daily life of most Sri Lankans. From there head to one of the most iconic kovils in the city, built purely out of granite as a tribute to God Shiva, and then to Kochchikade church, a place where devotees of all religions gather in search of solace. Then wind your way through the bustling streets of Pettah, the maze that pumps life to all of Sri Lanka, where everything and anything you can possibly imagine can be found in any of the hundred shops you will encounter. Stop and enjoy a cup of masala chai as your guide explains the history behind the area and make sure to notice the stunning minaret of red and white amidst this explosion of color and chaos as you explore Pettah.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
