The Frangipani Tree is a favored beach property just 15 minutes from the historic heritage city of Galle. Designed by the talented architect Channa Daswatte, a protégé of the late Geoffrey Bawa, the property is divided into four free-standing villas; each named after Sri Lanka’s endangered marine turtle species. While the property benefits from a wide sandy beach frontage with sweeping ocean views, a grassy bank ensures utmost privacy.
The property’s contemporary design is evident through its high airy ceilings, polished cement floors and white-washed walls with sweeping verandas, hidden courtyards and intimate private gardens adding strong character. Dip in the 35ft long lap pool, go for a sunset stroll or play a leisurely game of tennis on the hard court if you feel like it.
Each of the nine suites are beautifully designed with custom-designed furniture and built-in sofa beds and ensuite bathrooms feature cement bathtubs with a range of toiletries.

With two luxurious ocean-view suites, this free-standing villa benefits from private outdoor living spaces, a covered veranda with private dining table and bathrooms enhanced by a private flower-filled garden. Young families can also be accommodated comfortably in Hawksbill, which has interconnecting suites.

A separate villa comprising two elegant ocean view suites, these feature private outdoor living spaces furnished with sofa beds, pool loungers and dining tables. The outdoor bathroom has a private garden with bathtub and shower.

This two-story villa beside the pool has five suites, out of which three are on the ground floor and two are located on the first floor. While the three of the suites offer direct views of the ocean, the remaining two open out to a frangipani-lined courtyard and the swimming pool.

The menu at The Frangipani is of an exceptional standard; expect to indulge in plenty of fresh seafood, brought straight from the market. Tuck into delights such as seared yellow fin tuna, lobster Carpaccio and spicy grilled squid. While guests are free to request their favorite dishes from the chef at any time, a day menu featuring light snacks and salads as well as a more lavish dinner menu offers a good selection of choices with a wicked selection of desserts. The main dining table seats up to 20 and is located on the ground floor of Olive Ridley, overlooking the pool. However, guests can choose to dine where they like; on the sweeping verandah, in the garden or in the privacy of their own suite.
Sustainability
Set on pristine Thalpe beach, The Frangipani Tree does much to conserve its beach frontage and educates its guests on responsible travel, promoting the preservation of local energy and water supplies. The Frangipani Tree also segregates all waste for possible recycling.
Just for the kids
With a large pool and tennis court, it is ideal for older children. Younger kids can look forward to fun day trips, which include taking a boat from Unawatuna to snorkel on the reefs off Rumassala and visiting the rainforest with a naturalist.
