Bar Reef is a low-key yet stylish beach resort. You can enjoy swims in the infinity pool at night, which is lit up with lights in the shapes of star constellations and long walks along the beach. It is worth making the most of the water sports on offer. Enjoy diving and snorkeling over Bar Reef, only a short boat ride away, and heading further out to sea to see hundreds of spinner dolphins. If you are lucky, you may also spot blue whales and sperm whales, which swim these waters between October and April.
This is beach living at its most classic. It is not for everyone. But if you like nature and eco, then it will certainly work its charm on you.
NOTE: On the coastline, approximately 4km from the hotel, there is a major power plant. When on the beach looking left the power plant and the peer serving it can be seen. We have been working with all the hotels in the area since the inception and to date a very small number of people have brought this to our attention. The immense majority of clients are very happy with the overall experience in all the hotels of the Kalpitiya stretch, however in order to better manage the expectations of our clients we feel it is important to mention the fact. You may find more information and direct customer reviews on trip adviser.
The cabanas are beautifully natural with mud walls and illik grass roofs. The comfortable mattresses are set upon an earthen platform and come complete with mosquito nets. The outdoor bathrooms are set in a palm enclosure so you can shower in privacy with only the sky above you. There is a lovely sitting area at the front, where you can read and chat with loved ones. The sofas here can be turned into extra beds if needed.
The villas are homely and private and are ideal for families or a group of friends. They comprise two bedrooms opening out into bathrooms with their own tropical gardens and featuring cascading showers under coconut palms. Each one has a large, airy front verandah with two seating areas. These can be converted at night into as many as six single beds (all with their individual mosquito nets). There is a common bathroom and a separate garden shower for use by those who might be sleeping on the verandah.
