The main house has features of a wildlife bungalow but also takes in the beach setting with open verandahs on both floors. The ground floor is the main living and dining area. The house is set in wonderful tropical gardens with the vegetable patch at the back and a flowerbed and round lawn bordering the front of the house. Along the entrance driveway, nestled amongst shrubbery, are homely whitewashed cabanas with thatched roofs, which are ideal for those who are looking for more privacy than the main house.
Between surfing and swimming, during the day you can relax in the hammocks and lounge spaces that are dotted around the gardens, complete with colourful cushions and calming Buddha and Ganesh statues.
There are so many activities on offer– as well as brilliant surf spots, you can climb up to ancient rock temples, visit the Lahugala national park in the late afternoon to see elephants, find your own deserted beach to spend the day on, take an early morning bike ride to appreciate the splendour of the local area and much more! Ask Sharon for her favourite spots.
The team at Hideaway is environmentally conscious and as well as growing as much organic produce as possible and having a water bottle refill policy, Sharon is one of the founders of the Arugam Bay beach clean up scheme. Sustainability is a very important part of the ethos of this special place. With a team of volunteers she helps to maintain the beach, and collect rubbish, so that it remains the golden and beautiful hideaway that it was when surfers first discovered the area in the 1970s.
