At the pinnacle of the hill is the highlight of the three properties, a luxury villa known as Mount Cinnamon. This was designed by Anjalendran, one of the country’s leading architects who trained under the late Geoffrey Bawa. It offers commanding panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape – over Weligama Bay, and surrounding jungle, paddy fields and village temples. The design is traditionally Sri Lankan and works brilliantly in the tropical climate with the central courtyard bringing a breeze along the walkways. The house is designed so that it captures the changing light throughout the day.
At the front of Mount Cinnamon, bordering the lawn is a sea-facing terrace where you can enjoy meals in the shade and admire the views. There is also an inside dining area divided from the comfortable drawing room by a fantastic Laki Senanayake sculpture of Bacchus. The owner’s large collection of Sri Lankan contemporary art is one of the resounding features of the house.
There are four bedrooms, all elegantly decorated and positioned around a central courtyard area, which features a lawn and a beautiful sapphire blue pool.
Halfway down the hill is the Cinnamon Museum. This is built on two floors with a central open courtyard, making it a dramatic and artistic space. It is decorated with interesting artwork, including a sculpture of a phoenix, which tells the story of how the dying phoenix gathered branches of cinnamon on his last night to create a pyre so that his successor could be reborn out of the ashes. There are four comfortable rooms on the ground level, decorated with colourful fabrics and fittings. The upper floor holds the world’s first cinnamon museum with contents gathered from around the world.
At the base of the hill, set beside a winding track with jungle either side, you come to The Bungalow, which is a restored estate house or walauwa. This features a well-kept lawn and garden where you can sit and enjoy breakfast in the morning and candlelit evening meals. The three-bedroom house has been tastefully decorated, blending antique furniture with modern artwork. It is homely and ideal for a group of friends or family.
There are four bedrooms in total – three with double beds, and one has a single bed but an extra bed can be added. Each has an en suite bathroom, ceiling fan and an air-conditioning unit. The rooms are elegantly decorated in natural, muted colours. The bed covers are in keeping with the setting and made from specially woven “cinnamon” fabric.
