We designed this trip for a family with kids starting from about 4 or 5 years old upwards. The villas and hotels that we have chosen are family friendly and all have swimming pools.
| Galle | Take a late afternoon walk along the historic 17th century Dutch ramparts. This is a time when local families come to fly kites, sit and relax on the grassy fortifications. Children can enjoy playing on Lighthouse beach, flying kites and buying local snacks from vendors, such as fresh mango and pineapple. Adults can try the spicy chickpeas and peanuts that are sold at this time of day. A highlight is watching the freestyle divers leaping off Flag Rock into a pool below. |
| Koggala | A wonderful way to spend an afternoon is to take a boat ride on Koggala Lake and visit some of the small islands that lie in the middle. Children can enjoy meeting a family who specialise in cinnamon peeling and will demonstrate the art. A visit to the Titagalla white tea plantation is always a hit and parents and adults alike can enjoy tasting tea with a slice of chocolate cake in an old plantation bungalow. |
| Kosgoda | A visit to the Kosgoda turtle hatchery is memorable for children and adults. Hold the baby turtles in your hands and release them onto the sand before watching them totter into the great Indian Ocean. |
Bastions, turtles and tea fields is a one week trip down to the south of Sri Lanka that incorporates new experiences for the kids – watching turtles hatching and being released into the sea, admiring fishermen on stilts, taking tuk tuk rides, playing in the jungle, swimming and snorkelling in the sea and of course making sand castles! Meanwhile we have included interesting activities for parents such as walking the 400-year old rampart walls in Galle Fort, exploring a tea, cinnamon and rubber plantation, visiting temples, diving and even venturing out into the deep ocean to spot blue whales and dolphins.
We have chosen APA Villas, an intimate beach hotel with family rooms that are designed to comfortably accommodate four people and then Why House, a beautiful property set inland from Thalpe. The location is perfect; just 5 minutes from the beach and 15 minutes from Galle Fort whilst the gardens are ideal for children to play in.
