Is this trip for you?
The Kandy Perahera is a festival that is a child (and adult’s) dream, particularly if you love elephants! Fortunately this festival falls at a time when many kids are on school holiday in July/August so think about spending a couple of nights in Kandy to enjoy this extraordinary nightly procession with your family.
|Go Behind the Scenes at the Temple of the Tooth||We will get special access so that you can visit the Temple of the Tooth during this time and see the preparations for the procession: elephants being adorned, dancers practising their steps and having their make-up done. This is a magical experience for children and adults.|
|The Perahera Procession||Watch this two and a half hour spectacle unfold. It will begin with the distant sound of drum beats and build to a crescendo of dancers, fire jugglers and troops of dazzling elephants.|
Each night the procession gets bigger and bigger until the 10th night when there are over 100 elephants marching by. We will arrange for your tickets for one or even 2 nights at the Perahera with comfortable seating and picnic dinners to view all those elephants! We suggest you stay at a kids friendly hotel. Also in Kandy during the day wander around the Royal Botanical Gardens and spot the bats hanging from the trees! Did you know that “The Jungle Book” was filmed here? And “Tarzan” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”… Take the kids to Madame Helga’s home, the “anti-hotel” for biscuits and tea! Of course we can work the Kandy Perahera into a longer 2 week family holiday itinerary for you…Find out more
We would recommend you stay at Ellerton Bungalow which is set in rolling hills about thirty minutes from Kandy city centre or if you would like to be in the thick of things, try Queens Hotel, just next to the Temple of the Tooth or the comfortable Earl’s Regency Hotel where we have secured rooms.
