A Magical Island is an exclusive trip designed for couples and friends who are looking to enjoy the best of Sri Lanka, staying in the finest hotels on this pearl in the Indian Ocean. In the Cultural Triangle, through visits to the main historic ruins, you will learn about the ancient Sinhalese civilization, which was at one time the most advanced in the world. Five of these are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, situated on flat plains among lakes full of lotus flowers and parks teeming with migratory birds and wild elephants. We visit Kandy, the last capital of the Sinhalese kingdom, and enjoy the cooler climate, walking around the beautiful Botanical Gardens, watching traditional dance performances as the sun sets and visiting the Temple of the Tooth, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Buddhist world.
Then we travel by train to the Tea Country through thick carpets of emerald tea bushes, past waterfalls and colourful Hindu kovils. Here you will stay in an authentic bungalow that was formerly part of a plantation, and enjoy learning about the production of the world’s favourite beverage on a visit to a tea factory, as well as take long scenic walks over hills and beside glassy lakes.
For a complete contrast again, we travel down to the steamy south coast of Sri Lanka, famous for its golden beaches, some of the best in the Indian Ocean and its interesting colonial legacy, having been occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch and British over several centuries. We bask in the luxury of Aman Resorts for a few days and then head to Galle, a charming historical town. A visit to Galle Fort will reveal much of this fascinating history, whilst for those interested in local culture, you can visit a cinnamon and spice plantation and interesting local temples…
