Is this trip for you?
We designed this trip for a family with kids starting from about 4 or 5 years old upwards. They need to be able to climb Sigiriya Rock at least which is 1000 steps. Sounds a lot – but its perfectly doable! This journey includes some of the most kid friendly hotels in Sri Lanka.
|Cultural Triangle||The legend of Sigiriya: A palace? A rock fortress? The castle of King Kasyapa? The eighth wonder of the world? Sigiriya will capture the imagination of your little ones, and the not so little ones too. Lunch, a swim in the pool and off we go for an afternoon elephant ride! We take the kids to Mineriya National Park, a fantastic place to watch herds of elephants come to graze and bathe. You can also see huge flocks of birds and a crocodile or two!|
|Kandy||Wander around the Royal Botanical Gardens and spot the bats hanging from the trees! Did you know that “The Jungle Book” was filmed here? And “Tarzan” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”… Show the kids the spectacle of Kandyan dancing, and take them to Madame Helga’s home, the “anti-hotel” for biscuits and tea! Take the train to the hills and visit the Kotmale Valley, a valley with a legend. The legend of King Dutugemunu and an elephant than never forgets! Visit a Tea Factory… pity it’s not a Chocolate Factory hey?|
|Galle||Take a late afternoon walk along the historic 17th century Dutch ramparts. This is a time when local families come to fly kites, sit and relax on the grassy fortifications. Children can enjoy playing on Lighthouse beach, flying kites and buying local snacks from vendors, such as fresh mango and pineapple. Adults can try the spicy chickpeas and peanuts that are sold at this time of day. A highlight is watching the freestyle divers leaping off Flag Rock into a pool below.|
Sri Lanka with the kids is a two-week trip that brings you the highlights of Sri Lanka: its inland history and coastal beauty. We have carefully selected family friendly high-middle range hotels that will satisfy the whole family.
We spend two days in the Cultural Triangle indulging in adventure: we take trips to see wild elephants in national parks, watch macaque monkeys climbing among the rocks and trees, explore ancient cave temples, and horse-ride around lakes created by Sri Lanka’s ancient kings. Then we head to Kandy, where you can take a scenic train ride to a tea plantation, take a boat trip on the lake, visit the incredible Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, where many famous people have planted a tree over the centuries, and the famous elephant orphanage.
You will see the scenery give way to lush paddy fields, emerald coconut groves and golden beaches as you arrive in the tropical south of Sri Lanka. Here you can watch turtles hatching and being released into the sea, admire fishermen on stilts, take tuk tuk rides, play in the jungle, swim and snorkel in the sea and of course make sand castles! We have also included interesting activities for older family members, such as walking the 400-year old rampart walls in Galle Fort, exploring a tea, cinnamon and rubber plantation, visiting temples, diving and even venturing out into the deep ocean to spot blue whales and dolphins.
We have chosen Kandalama hotel and Ellerton Bungalow in the up-country. Kandalama is one of Geoffrey Bawa’s most famous designs and boasts stunning, modern architecture with breathtaking lake views and Sigiriya rock in the distance. Ellerton is a beautiful bungalow on the outskirts of Kandy with 6 bedrooms, which is cosy and the perfect place to enjoy the cool mountain air and hill walks. In the south we have selected APA Villas, an intimate beach hotel with family rooms that are designed to comfortably accommodate four people. Your remaining nights will be spent at Why House, a beautiful property set inland from Thalpe and only a 5 minute walk away from the beach.
