Riding the rapids
Keeping up with the Indiana Jones’
Down the Amazon, Up the Niagara, along the Mississippi or fizzing white-water of the Ganges? The rivers of Lanka, have a talent to deceive. River rafting in Kithulgala (the best white-water site) will make you dream you are in a scene from Bridge over the River Kwai. David Lean shot it here in 1954 and the bridge came to an explosive end where now you ride grade 3 rapids between lush, dramatic, jungle – which later appeared in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
For the adventure shy who like to experience the magnificent movie backdrop which director John Derek used twice over and Sir Carol Reed who filmed Outcast of the Islands called “the most natural and complete outdoor film set” you can find enough white knuckle in the Mahaweli Ganga on the edge of sumptuous Rainforest. Quite incredible to believe you are merely a half hour from Sri Lanka's second largest city.
Don’t read the book. Don’t watch the movie, ride the very rapids!
