Surfing in Sri Lanka
A new meaning to third world!
International surfers in the 1970’s ear marked Arugam Bay on the East coast for events such as the British Pro Surfing Association, last held in 2004. Austrailian surfers rate the Sri Lankan waves better than in South Austrailia or England!
The additional plus is that beaches are empty whether on Midigamma, Ahangama, Polhena, Mirissa, Weligamma or Hikkadua and three-wheeler drivers so surf-friendly and sassy they will load up boards 5-high to whizz you down to secret coves. During April to November you can catch the tide on the East (best in June, July and August) while November to April provides varied breaks round the West coast . For climate, quality and temperature it takes some beating.
During November and April you can surf on both East and West coasts. A rare phenomenan. That’s why surfing in Sri Lanka rocks!
Planning a surf itinerary in Sri Lanka
Arugam Bay: Consistent good Right breaking waves of up to 1.6m during April to October and (often in November) plus the very laid back scene, is what attracts surfers from round the world to this desert-island stretch of East coast for a magnificent 500 meter double peak ride if the swell is pumping. But Arugam Bay is not just a pro's paradise and paradoxically well suited to beginners with a small easy right outside Mambo's. Accommodation in Arugam bay is mostly budget but there is talk of boutique hotels and villas coming up soon.
Hikkaduwa is well know for having one of the best breaks in the island. Hikkaduwa is also a very popular beach destination and is famous among back packers and budget travellers. If you don't want to rough it but still want to enjoy the surf stay in Galle or Bentota and go on a day surfari. Galle is a mere 20km south of Hikkaduwa, Bentota is 40km to the north.
20 minutes south of Galle is Ahangama and a further 20 minutes is Mirissa beach. Basing yourself in Galle is an option but if you want to be closer to the action and on the beach choose The Fortress for Ahangama or Taprobane Island for Mirissa.
