Why Club Villa?

Club Villa is an exceptionally serene seventeen-room boutique hotel that’s been welcoming discerning guests into its homely embrace for over 30 years. Located to the south of Bentota on a lengthy 9km stretch of golden sand, Club Villa was originally built as a seaside escape for the owners with just four tranquil bedrooms back in 1976. Four years later it opened its doors to international travellers and became the island’s first boutique property as it welcomed visitors from all over the globe, many of which were so drawn to the nature-filled gardens, the homeliness of the rooms and the warmth of the staff that they and their families have repeated their stays numerously over the years by choosing to ‘come home’.

The uniqueness of Club Villa is that whilst it has undergone many upgrades over the years, it’s essence and philosophy have always remained the same; providing a home from home experience for guests enamoured by nature, tranquility, comfort and great food. Its build is elegant and timeless as it perfectly represents the beautifully peaceful nature-filled gardens in which it stands, just a little above and away from the sea. Four of Sri Lanka’s great artists have each made their mark on Club Villa; first the late architect Geoffrey Bawa who designed for the owners the original four bedroom house back in 1976, which was added to later by his protégé Channa Daswatta along with the building that houses the famous Club Suite. Leading architect Chelvadurai Anjalendran also designed a part of the hotel whilst noted artist Laki Senanayake’s exquisite Sinharaja mural of winding creepers and jungle foliage in the main house is 30 years old.

Club Villa highlights life’s simple pleasures by having a communal TV room, but no TVs in the bedrooms themselves. There’s a sundrenched freshwater swimming pool with jacuzzi plus the great expanse of ocean beyond. Designed as much for peace-seeking couples as it is for convivial groups, many of Club Villa’s double bedrooms have also a mezzanine floor with second bed that makes them as perfect for friends as for families. Each room category enjoys a different view and privacy can be found not only in-room but also in little pockets of the large sun-dappled garden where furniture is artfully scattered for relaxing and alfresco dining within earshot of the sea. Club Villa is well-known for its excellent cuisine and nature-filled surrounds so gourmet garden-loving guests looking for low-key R&R and impeccable service will not be disappointed here.

Club Villa’s Club Suite is the most lavish of them all and our firm favourite.

King coconut juice is offered as a tropical mid-morning refreshment by the swimming pool whilst a glorious garden-side High Tea is set up in the afternoon.

There’s a tranquil massage room where glorious pampering treatments are expertly carried out.

Club Villa is an excellent location for weddings which are beautifully put together irrespective of whether the wedding party numbers 10 or 200.

Trains often pass by at the end of the garden. The burgundy carriages typically packed with people are incredibly unique and their rumbling passing only lasts for a few seconds. Fascinating, but parents with young children should keep their eye out as the track is unfenced.

Children under 12 receive a 50 percent food discount.
