Why Anilana - Taprobana?

Described by many as Sri Lanka’s most romantic beach retreat, Taprobana is located down a leafy by-lane to the south of Bentota. Beautifully designed, furnished and decorated by Sri Lankan lifestyle guru Anilana, this nine-bedroom property was conceived as a source of inspiration and as a means to escape from the stresses and strains of contemporary living. Cool cement floors, an emerald green lawn brightened by colourful flowers, cool white frangipani blossoms and lotus ponds, a turquoise swimming pool and a secluded location close to a quiet stretch of beach is barefoot luxury at its very best.

Each of the rooms at Taprobana is individually styled and decorated with carefully selected pieces of art and antiques that reflect Sri Lanka’s rich colonial past and ancient heritage. In fact beautiful artefacts are liberally scattered throughout the property in an elegant uncluttered manner typical of Anilana’s impeccable simplistic style that gives the property just enough colour, plenty of warmth and lots of character. The spacious well-tended to garden stretches across a rustic railway line to reach the soft golden sand where even ‘beach service’ is offered should you need any cooling refreshment as you relax under the hot sun. The fine cuisine of Taprobana is mouth-wateringly good.

A peaceful, private and pampering home from home, Taprobana will afford you with much-needed down time. Enjoy a refreshing ayurveda massage from the comfort of your own room, chill out in the garden with an ice-cold beer or sip sundowners from the pretty Mediterranean-inspired poolside pavilion to your heart’s content whilst listening to the ocean waves in the background. Although you might not wish to leave this secluded paradise, Bentota’s many varied attractions are only a short distance away.

Taprobana sits on a 2km stretch of sandy beach.

The hotel is close to Lunuganga – the late Geoffrey Bawa’s private residence – a beautiful must-see house and garden.

Excellent water sports facilities are located close by.

A noisy train clatters by every now and again, adding a measure of authenticity and charm. Room number 9 is our favourite since it is closest to the sea and has a large private terrace enlivened by tropical plants.

Approximate distance from the airport: 3 hours by road, 35 minutes by air.

Child Policy: Cots are available. No charge for under 5 years sharing with parents. No extra beds.
