Why The Fortress?

With a design that fuses the colonial architecture of Galle Fort with slick modern styling, the Fortress is an innovation on the south coast. Stretching along a narrow strip of sun-drenched beach, the hotel is situated within tropical gardens whose grassy flower and tree-flecked lawns wind around the meandering swimming pool which at night is beautifully lit by tiny fibre optic colour-changing lights. Aside from the fact that each of the rooms has exclusive state-of-the-art entertainment systems, the hotel also features an air-conditioned gym, a business centre, a boutique, an art gallery and the luxurious Lime Spa.

Fortress by name, fortress by nature: Huge pillars, endless polished cement, dark wood floors and high ceilings characterise this hotel, which is surrounded on three sides by towering walls. The effect is softened by modern furnishings, splashes of colour, intelligent lighting and very friendly and helpful staff who make it their aim to cater to your every need and whim. Each of the rooms are sumptuously designed for guests’ supreme comfort with everything in them that the modern traveller could possibly wish for including espresso makers, Jacuzzis, i-pods and super king-sized beds.

The cuisine is delicious, and comes from a handful of restaurants while the all-glass wine cellar features as many as 2,000 bottles of wine. At The Fortress, the comfort and satisfaction of guests is paramount and while there is plenty to see in the local area – turtle hatcheries, tea factories, Galle - it protectively encourages you to stay put. Our tips? Order your table for a romantic dinner to be set up in the shallow end of the pool overlooking the ocean or enjoy a refreshing cocktail with your feet curled into one of the 70’s style Perspex hanging chairs overlooking the ocean. Bliss!

The Fortress has been credited with creating the most expensive dessert in the world. ‘The Fortress Stilt Fisherman Indulgence’ is priced at $14,500. Wow!

Very child-friendly, the Fortress’s Little Adventures Club organises fun activities and cares for the little ones so you can put your feet up and relax.

Beach Rooms are the most popular – they have direct access to the garden, pool and beach.

While swimming is better further down the coast, there is a small coral rock lagoon in front of the hotel that is safe for swimming out of the monsoon periods.
