Even though this historic hotel in the heart of Galle Fort has had a complete refit since becoming an Aman resort, it remains true to its magnificent past when it comfortably and popularly accommodated 140 years of guests in its time as the famous New Oriental Hotel. Many of the expansive Burmese teak floorboards have seen the tread of over 300 years of history while much of the building including the beautiful facade, verandah and Zaal (Great Hall) as well as a huge amount of original antique furniture have been carefully, painstakingly and cleverly restored. The result is a unforgettably classic colonial hotel that offers guests every contemporary luxury such as spacious bedrooms, modern bathrooms, a beautiful swimming pool and ‘The Baths’ - a stunning spa complete with luxury ayurveda centre and marble-walled candlelit hydrotherapy room – without detracting from the ambience of its magnificent past.

From every window of Amangalla can be seen a majestic view of the historic fort – of the ramparts, of the Dutch Church, of the clock tower, of the lighthouse and over the ramparts and out to sea where the sun sets so magnificently over the never-ending red tiled roofs. The 200-year-old garden is surprisingly large and beautifully mature with gnarled frangipani trees brimming with scented white flowers that scatter onto serene grassy lawns. A secluded yoga and meditation pavilion lies to the back of the property while an azure mosaic tiled pool surrounded by ambient ambalamas and palm-shaded sun beds provide a hidden oasis affording you ample opportunities to escape from the world.

The cuisine at Amangalla is as renowned for its excellence almost as much as the beautiful surroundings of where it can be enjoyed. Abundant information is given to you regarding the history of the fort and personal butlers act as guides to take you on vivid journeys through narrow streets that are almost deserted by late afternoon. Exquisite antiques, clever reproductions, exciting prints and a fascinating ‘museum’ in the library showcasing memorabilia from the days of the NOH provide plenty of interest. While the service is every bit as exceptional as it was in the past, Aman has personified it so that the contemporary traveller will feel very much at home.

The Garden House – a beautifully secluded two-storey suite ideal for honeymooners – was actually the residence of previous owner Ms Nesta Brohier.
