Why Tamarind Hut?

Situated on an extensive coconut palm ‘island’ in the Yatagala Valley surrounded by iridescent green rice paddies, this beautiful wattle-and-daub two bedroom home is a must for anyone looking for serious R & R. With its traditional mud floors, tightly compacted walls and palm thatched roof, Tamarind Hut is visually reminiscent of an authentic Sri Lankan home. Blessed with an abundance of space and its own unique style, Tamarind Hut represents simple luxury, without being overly indulgent.

For owner Olivia, the design, situation and views are also wonderful reminders of a period spent in Indonesia where much of the beautifully crafted furniture, textiles and intricately carved fittings have come from. Distressed window frames, wooden chairs and antique cupboards stylishly complement the naturally bumpy sand-coloured walls. Just off the semi-circular verandah is a cosy cushion-strewn lounge and fully equipped kitchen where a chef (on request) can prepare wholesome and hearty meals.

The wide verandah offers a thoughtful place to pass the time while the oval-shaped swimming pool overlooking the rural scene is a wonderful place to cool off in the heat of the day. Further down the garden, the lawn takes you beside palm and bread fruit trees to the edge of a coppice which has become a popular spot for cricket, BBQs and bird watching. The sizeable lawned gardens offer children the freedom to roam at will in their own perfectly private playground.

Opportunities for walking and cycling are endless; along tiny lanes between paddy fields, into the low-lying hills, to the 1,200 year old temple at Yatagala or even to the beach at Unawatuna. The historic city of Galle and its enchanting Fort is only a ten minute drive away.
