Why The Courtyard?

With its convenient location at the crossroads of Lighthouse Street and Pedlar Street in historic Galle Fort, this five bedroom house is an ideal refuge for those wishing to explore the local sights on foot and for those who like to feel perfectly at home whilst on holiday. This tastefully renovated property is one of the oldest Dutch villas in the fort, dating back to the seventeenth century. Many of the villa’s original features have been carefully preserved such as soaring ceilings, antique fans, door and window frames as well as the British colonial courtyard garden, whilst some new additions in the form of modern en-suite bathrooms and stylish furnishings reflect a contemporary interior design which has further enhanced the villa’s unique charm.

Sofa seating characterizes the indoor living room, whilst wide square archways lead into both the entrance hall and formal dining area. Set with a long wooden table accompanied by contemporary plastic seating and surrounded by antique cabinets and Asian artefacts, the dining table seats up to twelve people. Just outside of here is a lounge that leads into the spacious courtyard featuring a grassy garden with wooden decking ideal for alfresco dining. Each bedroom is individually designed and features an open plan sleeping/bathing area featuring a unique bathtub, which is like a magnet to the eye. Four of the bedrooms – all doubles – are located on the first floor, linked by a bridge walkway, with two featuring a split level design with mezzanine sleeping area. A fifth bedroom is located beside the equipped kitchen on the ground floor. Each bedroom overlooks the pillared courtyard garden.

Guests staying at The Courtyard are encouraged to make themselves feel at home, whether cuddling up with a book on the sofa or even in one of the unique bathtubs, or chatting to the friendly managers Uma and Affan who will happily engage you in conversation and inform you about where to visit in the local area and beyond. The house is located at the heart of the fort and so all of this historic town’s attractions, restaurants and cafes are right on your doorstep; we recommend a late afternoon walking tour of the fort’s narrow streets followed by sunset on the western ramparts and cocktails back at the house! An experienced staff team will take care of your every need including a cook able to create delicious Sri Lankan cuisine.

The design of the villa (rooms on first floor, steep steps and bridge walkway) is unsuitable for young children.

The staff will happily shop for guests wishing to do their own cooking.

The house has internet facilities but no TV.

A phone with local sim card is available for guests use with both managers’ contact numbers programmed in.
