Riding In Style

Horses for courses

While the 2-storey Grandstand in Cinnamon Gardens remains a lonely dowager, an enterprising local motor racer is offering a different type of horse power. A fifteen minute ride from The Race Bungalow built in 1920’s on one side of Galle Face Green for the first recorded race meeting, a riding school which uses horses from the celebrated Rajastani breed, the Marwari is in full swing.

3-15 day safari’s start at Dambulla, cantering through the elephant corridor to Kandy, past tea estates and up to Nuwara Eliya, the waterfalls and mountains of Ella are viewed from a unique standpoint as the trail wends its way down mountain passes to conclude in pilgrims destination of Kataragama. The horses are specially trained for long haul and a back-up jeep carrying emergency medical supplies for both horses and riders accompany you. Comforting gesture, the saddles are specially padded so you don’t get saddle-sore after long hours of riding.
