Kandy,
Tea Trails and Bentota Beach |
We will pick
meet you personally at the airport where we will introduce
you to your guide and driver. The trip to Kandy from Colombo’s
international airport takes approximately three hours.
Kandy is known for its mild climate, colonial architecture,
its spectacular festival - The Kandy Perahera which takes
place in August. The Perahera is a procession of the sacred
Buddha relic through the streets of Kandy, accompanied
by dancers, musicians, entertainers and elephants. Kandy
is also well known for being home to Sri Lanka's holiest
temple, the Temple of the Tooth. Victoria Reservoir, a
short half hour ride from Kandy is home to Sri Lanka’s
best golf course, the Victoria Golf Club, regarded by
many as one of the most scenic golf courses in Asia.
In Kandy we would enthusiastically recommend that you
stay in The Kandy House. If you choose to stay in Victoria
the place to stay is Clingendael. The Kandy House is the
ancestral home of one of Kandy’s most influential
aristocratic families, a unique arched Sri Lankan manor
house, providing seclusion and serenity in a tropical
garden setting close to Kandy. Clingendael is located
on a hill overlooking the Victoria Golf Club and reservoir.
Clingendael is a lovely boutique hotel with great views
over the Victoria Golf and the reservoir.
Your next stop is the hill country, also known as the
tea country. The train ride from Kandy to the heart of
Sri Lanka’s Tea Country is one of the most scenic
train rides in Asia. There is an observation carriage
at the end of the train with large windows to enjoy the
views. There are two trains daily and the travel time
is approximately 2.5 hours. The train stops in Hatton
where your driver will await at the station to drive you
to the Tea Trails bungalow of your choice. Tea Trails
consists of 4 classic colonial bungalows built for British
tea estate managers in the days of the Raj and we believe
it is one of the most exquisite experiences to be had
in Sri Lanka, with butler service and fine cuisine.
From here you descend westward following the path of the
Kelani River, one of the best rivers in the country for
rafting and well known as well for being the site where
the epic “Bridge Over the River Kwai’ was
filmed in the mid 50s, a classic that went on to win 7
Oscars in 1957.
The trip to Bentota, on the west coast takes approximately
5 hours. Bentota’s wide open beach and beautiful
lagoon are its major attractions. In Bentota we like Taru
Villas Taprobana and Lunuganga. Taru Villas Taprobana
offers nine individually designed rooms; a beautiful,
deserted beach; discreet service and fine cuisine. The
house and gardens at Lunuganga, Bentota, were lovingly
created over several decades by the world renowned architect,
Geoffrey Bawa, as his vision of a tropical garden idyll.
The Italian inspired garden with spectacular views over
lakes and tropical jungle together with a simply designed
plantation house are one of the lasting legacies of Asia's
most famous architect. Lunuganga opens each year from
15 November to 30th April. At other times guided visits
can be arranged.
A final stop in Colombo will not disappoint. A glimpse
beneath the chaotic façade of this metropolis on
the banks of the Indian Ocean will reveal a treasure of
delights and surprises to the inquisitive visitor. We
always encourage our guest to experience Colombo for at
least a day or two. Colombo is not a city where crowds
of tourist are shoved from one monument to the next. It
is not a city of shopping malls or gigantic plasma screens
pumping out advertisements night and day. It is a city
with charming little hideaways waiting to be discovered.
We have carefully handpicked the best shops and galleries,
and the best restaurants. Sri Lanka In Style offers a
personalized shopping tour of Colombo for those interested.
In Colombo our favorite hotels are Park Street Hotel and
Casa Colombo, both small luxury hotels each well located
but offering a distinctly different experience. Park Street
Hotel is more classic, Casa Colombo is decidedly chic.
This itinerary can be tailored to suit your individual
requirements.
