A visit to an artist’s home

Back Back

Kandy is a city of arts, in many creative forms. From batiks to dance performances to extraordinary frescoes hidden within it’s temples and places of worship, there is art around every corner in Kandy. With such a strong pull towards the arts, the city tends to both attract and produce an eccentric bunch of artisans, who draw inspiration from the lush greenery of the surrounding Kandyan hills and arguably have been producing some of the best art in the country for hundreds of years. Spend an hour or two at an exclusive artist’s studio to talk art, philosophy and music with one of the most interesting characters you’ll meet on this trip.

Experience Overview

Your host, one of the country’s most eminent and reclusive artists, has been living and working in Kandy for the last three decades. His studio showcases a personal collection of his own paintings. The experience allows visitors to have an intimate glimpse into his life and work, and to discuss the work with the artist himself within his own private and creative world. Over welcoming glasses of fresh juice you can unwind in front of the tranquil views from his verandah as you get to know both your host and his daughter, who is an artist in her own right. Having being home-schooled and tutored in art by her father, she is engaged in developing her own visions on canvas. The work of both painters may be viewed at leisure between their home and the studio. The visit ends back on the verandah with a cup of tea and final conversation. Why meet an artist? Your host is completely unique.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
