A visit to Yatagala Rock TempleBack
The quaint Yatagala Temple lies inland from the beautiful beach town of Unawatuna. It is believed that the history of the Yatagala temple runs back to the time of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. Built around and within giant boulder-like rock formations, the temple is a little visited place of worship in the south. Inside the Image House of the temple, is a statue of reclining Buddha, which is nine meters in length. The vibrant murals within the Image House depict various scenes from the Buddha’s life and the ceiling is adorned with floral motifs from Kandyan era.

The temple looks over thriving paddy fields and small villages, offering scenic views. You will need to cover your knees and shoulders – and access the inner chambers barefoot or with socks. You will find socks in the basket inside the vehicle and a sarong in case you need one.
