Around Galle by classic car

Back Back

The port city of Galle is remarkable due to its extensive maritime history and colonial influence. Galle has an intriguing history that visitors can unravel while exploring the city and its wonders. Cruise around the city in a classic 1972 Volkswagen convertible to discover the city’s diverse facades and local lifestyle.

Experience Overview

Climb into the brilliant white Volkswagen and enjoy a leisurely drive along the roads of Galle. It is easily, the most fun way to have your local host to show you around with his own stories and inherent knowledge about the city. As you feel the salty breeze on your face, glimpse the colonial edifices that add an aura of elegance to the city. First, stop by a roadside vegetable and fruit market laden with fresh produce. Get to know about Sri Lanka’s vegetables and fruits that add both flavor and nourishment to local fare. Next, walk down the street to visit a local flower market. Back on the road, your host will drive you to the Galle International Stadium. It was declared a cricketing venue in 1927 and has witnessed some of the most amazing moments of cricket history. Perhaps one of the most stunning grounds in the world, the Galle International Stadium has the Fort as well as the Indian Ocean in the backdrop. Later, visit a local fish market full to brim with catch of the day. Finally, drive through the arched gate of the Galle Fort and learn about its battles and bastions. Take a stroll along the narrow lanes that crisscross the Fort to spot a haze of colonial houses, funky cafes, antique shops, art galleries and churches.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
