Bhikkuni: the Buddhist Nuns of Sri Lanka

Back Back

Explore a Bhikkuni monastery in the outskirts of Kandy with your host and learn the history of Buddhist nuns starting from the first; Mahapajapati Gotami. You will be taken through meditation halls and gardens, get to see the stupa, Bodhi tree and image houses and you may ask your guide questions about Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Afterwards you will meet with a bhikkuni who will describe the ordained life. This is ideal for those wanting to learn about the core principles of Buddhism and its history.

Experience Overview

The monastery that will feature the tour is exclusively a monastery for Buddhist nuns. As such they have similarities and differences to Buddhist monks. You will be able to take a leisurely stroll in the large gardens and listen to your knowledgeable guide and have him translate your questions to a nun or to the host, who is well-versed in the topic. Since you will have some time for that particular interview, it is advised to prepare some questions beforehand if you want to understand the origins of Buddhism in depth.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
