A private lunch at the home of renowned colored gems and stones expert Ifthikar Mahuroof is a non-linear experience if ever there was one. Spend a few hours in conversation with one of the most remarkable authorities on colored stones and mining of our times, Ifthikar Mahuroof and his family, in a warm and cozy residence just minutes from the Galle Fort.

Experience Overview

Arrive at noon at Ifthikar’s residence, a cozy house located just 5 minutes from the Galle Fort, where time has a way of standing still. A philosopher and a philanthropist, Ifthikar has travelled to all corners of the world, his family having ties with the international community since the 17th century through the world of diplomacy and trade. Ifthikar’s own journey as ‘Sri Lanka’s Gem King’ and the world’s greatest traveler, has been remarkable. About the Host

Ifthikar Mahuroof’s ancestors are of Moorish and Persian descent, having first arrived on the shores of Galle in the 16th century as the earliest traders of spice and colored stones to settle in the Fort. It was his great grandfather who presented British royalty with the great blue sapphires of the time. Today, Ifthikar is a 5th generation ‘merchant’, keeping his family’s trade and traditions alive. He is renowned for being one of the most respected authorities on the island for colored stones and other precious stones and was once referred to by the British press as Sri Lanka’s ‘Sapphire King’ and by diplomats as ‘a true giver in a world of takers’.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
