Stillness in a Sri Lankan village

Back Back

Find stillness and serenity with an extended stay in a Sri Lankan village that operates as an Ayurvedic retreat for six months out of the year. Here you can spend your days embracing peace and solitude in spectacular surroundings and experience living by Buddhist principles, alongside yoga and meditation practice, Ayurvedic treatments, and exploring paddy and crop cultivation techniques. A blissful detox from anyone looking to disconnect from their daily lives and the outside world.

Experience Overview

Ulpotha is magical. There is no other way to describe the beauty and serenity that you encounter at this village-cum-retreat which runs to the rhythm of the day. Spend your nights in a comfortable wattle-and-daub hut in a scenic spot, and while away your days with a variety of pastimes, depending on how active you want to be: go kayaking across the lake, or cycle around the village; walk to a viewpoint, and perhaps practice yoga there; learn about crop and paddy cultivation, and help to prepare traditional Sri Lankan dishes; try meditation or Ayurvedic treatments, and indulge in reading and artistic pursuits. Or, simply soak in the total tranquillity and take time to recharge. There is no set duration for this experience, but we recommend a minimum stay of 2 nights at Ulpotha to allow time to truly unwind.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
