Borderlands is a rustic campsite set on the edge of the Kelani River in Kitulgala, comprised of open-sided wooden huts which allow guests to lose themselves in nature. A stay at Borderlands will inevitably include high-energy river-based activities like white-water rafting, canyoning, abseiling and kayaking, all with high safety standards, led by well-trained guides. For those looking to stay dry, there is birdwatching and plenty of hikes in the surrounding jungle, although these are still likely to end with a river bath (if you so wish!). This is a great place for those who want to step out of their comfort zone and try out new adventures.
Borderlands offers accommodation in comfortable tents, cabins and chalets. The Long House, overlooking the river, is an amazingly chilled-out space with hammocks and bean bags where guests can relax with a chilled beer after a day of adventure. It also doubles up as a dining area where you can happily gobble down the delicious meals served up by the kitchen.
All rooms have mosquito nets to keep away the bugs. The chalets have attached bathrooms whilst the tents and cabins have shared bathrooms which are a short walk away from the rooms. Wi-Fi is available in The Long House.
There are four tents, each sitting on stilts close to the river. Each ‘tent’ has a thatched roof and a terrace looking out to gorgeous views. Bathrooms and showers for the tents are shared and located a quick walk away.
The six cabins come with twin beds and have shared bathrooms, similar to the tents. Two of the cabins are a bit more spacious and can comfortably accommodate up to four people.
The two chalets come with their own attached bathrooms with open-air showers and are spacious, furnished with twin beds with the option of adding in an extra bed if required. Both chalets are built on stilts by the river.
Things to do ?
The Borderlands kitchen whips up some delicious Sri Lankan, Western and Asian dishes that are loved by all. They also have chilled beers and a variety of fresh juices and milkshakes. All stays are on full board basis. There’s lots of space to dine in, whether you want to sit close to the river, in the Long House or as close to the kitchen as possible!
Just for the kids
Borderlands welcomes children, although this is perhaps a location best suited for children over five years. Some of the activities offered may not be suitable for younger kids due to safety reasons.
