PALM’s unique design strikes you as soon as you enter: corrugated black steel pyramids (housing the rooms) are scattered throughout the garden; stilted steel and glass villas stare out across the fields, and the large reception area is reminiscent of a warehouse – but is decorated with eclectic seating, tables, plants and sculptures. Inspired by the industrial architecture of East London, this boutique hotel is perfectly juxtaposed against its rural setting – a patchwork of shimmering paddy fields, agricultural land and pockets of jungle. These idyllic surroundings bring a total sense of peace to everyone who stays here and will stimulate creatives hoping to paint, write, play or sketch during their trip. Yoga enthusiasts will be pleased to know that classes can be arranged on request, and there is plenty of space in the garden for self-led practice.
The six cabanas are housed in black steel pyramids, with white-washed thatched roofs, white walls and polished cement floors keeping the rooms cool with a clean minimalist style – the main features are a large king-sized bed, rattan chairs and bedside tables. Eco-conscious shower gel, shampoo and conditioner are kept in the ensuite bathroom, which boasts an open-air shower, w/c, sink and mirror.
With two large rooms connected by a central bathroom, these raised-up suites are perfect for families. The glass front allows for sweeping views of the surrounding agricultural land, whilst dark interiors keep the rooms cold and comfortable. Copper furnishings and a powerful rainshower give the spacious bathroom a luxurious style injection. The master room is furnished with a king-sized bed, and the other room can accommodate up to two children and a crib.
The open-sided kitchen and bar sits at the back of the reception area, and guests can choose to eat as and when they like from the all-day dining menu which offers a delectable selection of fusion dishes that are a contemporary take on traditional Sri Lankan favorites. Fresh local ingredients are used, including some vegetables grown in PALM’s own allotment.
