Tamarind Hill

Galle

BackBack

A stately mansion on a three-acre estate in Galle

Price range :

Built in the 1800s and occupied over the years by a British Admiral and High Court Judge of the colonial era, Tamarind Hill combines the architecture and essence of a bygone era with a clever blend of modern amenities. The manor has been beautifully refurbished to encircle a sun-dappled courtyard and house 10 beautiful rooms and two exquisite suites.

Tamarind is characterized by sloping tiled roofs, high ceilings, elongated verandas and smooth polished cement corridors that are furnished with beautiful antiques, clever reproductions, and cushioned sofas. A Tamarind tree – from where the hotel takes its name – is the centerpiece to the large grassy courtyard at the heart of the property. There is also a magnificent infinity-edged swimming pool.

There are four types of room at Tamarind Hill – Standard, Superior, Deluxe and Suite. The rooms are all air-conditioned and either have private terraces or elevated balconies.

Cuisine

Tamarind’s executive chef Silvestre is a master at Sri Lankan and Thai cuisine. The menu lists delicious offerings made from local ingredients that include plenty of fresh fish and seafood. His authentic village-style rice and curry has been praised by past guests. Having worked in Australia and travelled throughout Asia he also expertly cooks specialties such as Singapore chili crab and Chinese grouper fish. Breakfasts consist of fresh fruits and continental offerings while lunches are typically light. Dinner dishes are more extravagant while the typically fruity desserts are all delicious, homemade and available at any time.

Just for the kids

The hotel is child-friendly. Apart from snorkeling and rainforests hikes with a naturalist, they can enjoy canoeing up the Ginganga.
