Going Off-Grid

Back Back

Going Off-Grid is one of our Elevated Experiences, multi-day journeys that take you off the beaten track and allow you to experience the authentic Sri Lanka away from the crowds. This experience takes you to a rural village in the picturesque Knuckles Mountain Range and then to a remote house in the middle of the jungle. In addition to the guided trek through stunning scenery, this experience enables you to truly connect with some local people and live as they do, staying in their home and bathing in the river. It is a true back to basics adventure that allows you to totally disconnect from your day-to-day life.

Experience Overview

Arrive in Rattota, near Matale, and meet your host for the next two nights. Together, take a quick tour of the local shops and markets to browse the exotic spices and vegetables that will be the foundation of your cuisine during your stay, then drive to your host’s village home – a 1.5-hour journey that promises beautiful views. After settling in, enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal with your host family, then head out to explore the village in the afternoon. You might even be brave enough to bathe in the river here, as the villagers do. Return to the house for dinner this evening. Rise early the next day and go on a guided trek through thick jungle, following clear pathways and looking out for wildlife as you go. You will reach your destination, a deserted village, in time for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure to embrace the utter tranquillity of your surroundings – there are a variety of hiking options to a series of beautiful viewpoints, or you may prefer to read, meditate, or take a refreshing dip in the nearby river. End the day with dinner round a bonfire, sharing stories with your host and guide. It is worth noting that, although this house has been renovated to make it habitable, there is no electricity or phone signal here and nature is your bathroom. On your final day, wake up in time to watch the sunrise and hear the chatter of birds flitting through the trees, then transfer back to the village for a final meal with your host family.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
