Bandarawela enjoys a high altitude in the tea country

Experiences in Bandarawela

Back Back

Bandarawela, the second largest town in the Uva Province, is tucked away amidst the undulating, verdant fields of Sri Lanka’s tea country. Its high altitude means that it enjoys cooler weather which is a more comfortable for walking, trekking and cycling than other areas of the island. Whilst Bandarawela does not have many attractions in its own right, it offers beautiful scenery for walking and offers travelers the chance to get some respite and recuperation from the stress of everyday life.

Bandarawela is close to Ella, in which there are many things to do, including visiting Ravana Falls, the stunning 16th century Bogoda Bridge and the ancient Dowa temple, which boasts an enormous standing Buddha carved into the rock face. Ella also has some fantastic walks, most notably the journey to Little Adam’s Peak through idyllic tea plantations and the trek to the top of Ella Rock which provides astounding views across the Ella Gap – all the way down to the south coast on a clear day. You might also like to try local buffalo curd served with palm treacle in one of the small cafes that line Ella’s high-street.
