Indulgent Villa Maggona is serenity defined, tucked on a quiet corner of the west coast in Bentota. Recently refurbished by the Sri Lankan architect Madhura Prematilleke, who won an architecture award for his efforts, this wonderful four-bedroomed property is a transformation of a local beach bungalow with spacious rooms and plenty of light. Flushes of color – amongst the soft furnishings and vibrant local artwork – offset the white, neutral shades of the light and airy interiors, whilst each of the bedrooms, living room, kitchen and dining areas all open directly via louvered folding doors to a sea-view veranda topped with a slatted timber pergola-style roof. This veranda runs parallel to a long lap pool that’s an exceptional addition to the property, and pathways through the garden lead directly to the beach. Villa Maggona has four bedrooms and sleeps 8– three of these open directly onto a poolside veranda and one is situated next door to the main house in a separate garden house. The villa can only be booked in its entirety for maximum exclusivity. They rooms include modern en-suite bathrooms with powerful rain showers, are all air-conditioned and come with LCD TVs with cable channels and DVD players.. The staff are well-versed in ensuring that guests have everything they need. Rates include all meals, soft drinks, snacks and bites.
The master bedroom is the largest and features a king-sized platform bed, dressing room, a lounge with rattan circular armchairs and writing desk and shelves filled with a variety of books. Next door to this is a smaller en-suite double with ocean views, and a twin bedroom with an oriental theme. To the side of the main house is the fourth garden room.

The great thing about Villa Maggona, is that you don’t need to worry about food as it’s all taken care of before you arrive. On booking, Jennifer will liaise with you about creating bespoke menus for your entire stay so that you can sit back and enjoy yourself fully. Nightly rates are full-board, or overboard as manager Jennifer likes to call it, as it doesn’t just include three great meals but also snacks, cakes, afternoon tea, soft drinks, fruit juices and chasers for your choice of alcoholic drinks. The chef makes the most wonderful home-cooked Sri Lankan cuisine and can also create a number of western meals if desired, plus special menus for the kids. BBQs are popular options and often the best way to enjoy sampling some of the amazing fresh fish and seafood that’s found in abundance in this coastal locale. The villa doesn’t sell alcohol so it’s best if you bring a few bottles with you from the airport duty free, or in Colombo. The staff can also go on your behalf to the local wine stores to buy liquor at cost price, or accompany you on a visit so that you can select your own.
Just for the kids
The villa is a wonderful place to spend a family holiday, with a large garden and pool.
