The Changing Lives of Plantation Youth

Back Back

Learn about tea plantations and the people who work in them by visiting a skills development school set amidst the fields of tea. You will be taken on a tour of the school to see how it is making a difference followed by tea in the staff room. You can also choose to include a walk in the estate and a demonstration of how tea leaves are picked.

Experience Overview

This is an experience unlike any other, the very core of sustainable tourism where your holiday will also help make a difference. You will get to attend an interactive lesson with the students and talk to the staff of the school all of whom were former students. The current students are all enthusiastic young adults who communicate well. Classes will not be in session so you would not be disturbing lessons. Afterwards you can participate on a 40 min walk at leisure around the estate, see the picturesque hills including Adam’s Peak in the distance, learning from a graduate who will accompany you; the lifestyles and aspirations of the plantations’ youth. End the experience by assisting the staff of the school in tea picking and learn how to perfect the art.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
